Using the Colt to prevent Dean from going to Hell at the end of Season 3

I was wondering if anyone ever wrote a story about someone most likely Sam shooting Dean with the colt, so Dean still dies but he doesn't go to Hell.

The theory behind the gun at the time was that it could kill anything and I assume that a demon shot with the gun wouldn't go back to hell like they do after they have been exercised. Therefore shooting Dean with the gun would prevent him from going to hell.

but what if when they get shot with the colt and it sends them to purgatory? like that's why when they shot lucifer, it didn't work (because angels really don't belong in purgatory) O:

It worked on demons and demons used to be humans. There was never any indication that when you were shot with the colt that you end up in Purgatory. If it did send him to purgatory at least it's not hell. The aspect of this particular idea that I'm most interested in is that moment when Sam is completely desperate, pulls out the colt and pulls the trigger because he believes it's the only way to save Dean from hell. If it works that's up the writer of the story. It was always going to be a desperate move with unknown consequences.
