This one doesn't really fit any of your specifics (there are few fics in our fandom that do, sadly), but Don't Hide Your Light (http://archiveofourown.org/works/210177) is billed as "a fic about non-normative gender performance". It's a well-known and beautiful fic (that you might have already read!) and is the closest I can think of off-hand.

I'm really surprised there are so few stories with these topics in this fandom that I could find. The one's that are there are really good.

It's reminds me of asexuality, another subject that is rarely explored in this fandom (but that I'm always on the look-out for)

Actually, there are quite a few asexual Cas fics kicking around... but I know that's not exactly your thing :)

And yes, yes a thousand times yes - there should be more transgender fics.

When I do I promise to bring it over here. (My bookmarks are a freaking mess, so it's gotta wait until I start transferring them over into an actual rec list, because I know I have it saved to add; the problem is I can't remember the actual story, just how Cas and Cas's viewpoint was written, so...) Don't hold your breath on the Dean one though, I'm pretty sure I read it before I started to bookmark stories.

Also you may want to look into Cas-inside-Claire fics, because the majority I've read at least mention how Cas has no gender, and it's almost always mentioned if it's from Cas's viewpoint. (Sorry, no recs for that.)

So the series itself isn't really about gender identity, but starting in part 5, the author does cover a little about how angels don't have a gender, and Gabriel switches genders and the story makes a point or two about how Sam treats Gabe differently depending on the form. It's a good series (I seriously love this author, and if you want something long to read) but up-front the gender identity is an extremely small part of it.

Btw, I also managed to read "Rubik's", and enjoyed it very much. I've never read a story, in which gender-neutral pronouns were used consistently, before, so that was interesting.

Yeah, well, I was looking for RPS mostly, because I couldn't imagine a story focusing on the gender issues mixed up with the hunting stuff and Wincest, but the stories recommended convinced me otherwise!

I wasn't actually expecting as many as I ended up having/finding. (I mean, I know there's actually a good amount of Dean figuring out his gender performance/John gender policing that comes up in certain recs, and also of Cas being genderless though that's a lot more hit or miss in terms of how well it's written, but yeah, I wasn't expecting this kind of list either.)

This has turned into a really good reference rec page for me too, so I figured I can just reply to my comment instead of yours if you'd rather not keep getting notices for fics. :) It was a really good ask, because there were less stories but more character diversity in them than I thought there would be.

Yes, the character diversity of the stories mentioned surprised me as well, but I was also surprised by the number of links to stories everyone came up with for this post. I feel like there's a lot more fics about Dean dealing with his masculinity/effeminacy out there, though maybe because it usually comes into play with his sexuality as opposed to his gender people aren't linking to those as much.

(As do a couple of her other fics, but not remembering which ones specifically atm.)
