I'm looking for any fics which explain why Sam didn't search for Dean when he was in purgatory. Maybe he had cancer or an illness, just something that prevented Sam from being able to search. I love Wincest and gen, but I'll take any pairing except Dean/Cas. Thanks!

Takes place after Southern Comfort, S8. The Vengeance Specter laid open wounds between the Winchester Brothers. A hunt goes wrong, which only deepens the divide. Just when Dean begins to feel like moving on and splitting up might be the best answer, a Pagan God drags Sam into a mission of absolution that he won't refuse. Dean discovers that his brother has been hanging on by a thread, and the year he was in Purgatory was much worse on Sam than he ever suspected. Cas, Benny, and, worst of all, Crowley see what he has somehow missed -- just how fragile Sam is. With a little help, Dean learns what Sam had been unable to share -- just how far he was willing to go do and what he is still going through, proving to Dean that he is still Sam’s stone number one.

Summary: When Dean gets back and reams Sam out for not looking for him, Sam can't bring himself to tell Dean what happened. He thinks Dean will blame him for losing their kid and that it'll be the final straw. Maybe Sam sneaks out to visit the grave and Dean follows, but up to the author how Dean finds out. Cue guilty!Dean and hurt!Sam who has to relive the painful memories from the last year.

And a couple by morganadw on A03. Heed the author warnings for them! There are dark reasons why Sam didn't look for Dean in these.
