Well, there's the Sundown Universe (http://community.livejournal.com/sundownverse) by [personal profile] poisontaster and [profile] brynwolf which "...posits that an apocalyptic health crisis (Avian Flu) decimated the world population in a wildfire of contagion, leaving the ruins of modern society to try and survive in the aftermath."
