Trying hard to find this fic but can't seem to.
Set in the Stanford Era. John dies and Pastor Jim calls Sam to give him the news. Sam is hanging out with some friends when the call comes and then a few minutes later Dean comes to the door, holding a gun and freaks everyone out.

All I can remember is the critter starts off small enough to perch on Dean's shoulder. It's some sort of cat-like winged quadruped, either a gryphon or something similar. John wants it to go away, but Dean is attached. At some point, they're on a wendigo hunt (either an AU of S1E2 or a different one later), and Dean has to hide from the wendigo. The gryphon(?) has either grown, or increased its size magically, and hides Dean by stashing him in a nook and nesting in front of him, because the wendigo is wary of it (there may be two windigos, and the surprise of a second one is why Dean has to hide). If it helps, I know for sure it was on AO3, as it's pretty much the only site I read on.
