AO3 has something like a ten year plan at this point, and that was what the fundraising for new servers and ongoing fundraising is about, if you don't keep your software current you almost get shoved out of the game. That's why all these small fic archives are closing down or moving to AO3, the eFiction software that runs them isn't being updated anymore (other than a small spam fix) so one more browser update or software update on your computer and the sites may not work anymore.
