Well, according to my rec list I have read 76 of this years' bigbangs. There are a lot of good ones out there, and I have even more on my to-read list.

The one special_k414 recs below is one that sticks in my mind for horror and making me think.

"A Slow Process of Understanding"

Warning: One incident of harsh rape, but not graphically described. Some dub con; how much there is involved is debatable.
Summary: It's a world like this one except for the all-powerful State that's very firmly in control and, oh, the fact that slavery is legal. Jared had never really thought about it, or the fight for freedom going on around him, he was too busy enjoying his privileged life as an actor on a sci-fi show. But what is he meant to do when he's forced to permanently bond to a slave he doesn't want just because he made one silly, drunken mistake? Does it change who he is, what he is? Trouble is, Jared isn't sure who he was to start with. He'd never thought about it. And what about his slave? Can he force Jared into learning something about himself?
(This really made me FEEL very strongly. Jared is really not a likable character in the beginning-well for a while. Even though we see everything from his pov we can realize how ignorant and selfish he is being. But this is really worth a read. I think this may be the bigbang (so far) that has made me the most invested in the outcome. The title really fits. The fic realistically explores slavery and how even good people can be caught up in something that society accepts.)

Scientists and statisticians have monitored falling birth rates for decades, helpless as declining fertility predicted possible human extinction. At eighteen, each is assigned to the man who will father the children he will bear. Jensen missed his testing; his status is discovered when he's an adult. Unprepared, untrained, and unwilling, he's assigned to Jared. Jared is conflicted by his desire to father children, his growing love for the man placed in his care, and sympathy for Jensen's difficulty adjusting to the changes in his life. Resentful and rebellious, Jensen finds unexpected strength and support from the man he should hate.
(I normally don't read much mpreg, but really even though this focuses on that fact it is about much more than that. Like the above I also get angry at this Jared sometimes, and though Jensen isn't called a slave that is basically what he is. Jared and Jensen make some choices the reader may not agree with.)

Dean is one of the military leaders, dedicated to wasting as many of the mutants he can, while Sam, permanently injured and confined to the base, is desperately searching for the answer that will save what’s left of humanity, and finally bring both boys the peace they crave.
(Another militaristic future-fic.[I don't know why there are so many, but they're great!] With Zombies! There are moments that made me almost cry. Very Sam and Dean-or what I imagine they would be like in this situation and if they were together (sexually) and what they would do for each other.)

Yet he knows just as well as Dean that that is absolutely impossible, so maybe Sam is just going crazy and all the weird noises he hears are simply the sounds of the wall in his mind falling to pieces.
(Horror. Creepy dolls. Possible crazy!Sam. Ambiguiousness. Starts out case-fic and moves on from there. Lots of hurt!Sam. The beginnings of Sam/Dean.)

Hmmm, I'm not sure but With abandon or not at all (http://bewaretheides15.livejournal.com/51598.html) has Jared with piercings? He definitely has tattoos, and strange hair, so there might be piercings as well.

If not, it's still a really awesome story, one of my favorite this year!

Jensen's life was complicated enough when his biggest worry was what crazy color his best friend/roommate/ex-boyfriend/co-executive chef, Jared, was going to dye his hair this week. Then his dreams came true and, somehow, his life started falling apart. Now he's got an insane client to please, a career-making meal to cook, a hodge-podge kitchen staff to corral, embarrassing, half-naked pictures plastered all over the internet and maybe, somewhere in there, a love of his life to win back.
