This description is not my own, and I only found it in ff.net a while back and never got to remember which story this one was.

"I'm trying to find a story in which Sam gets hurt fairly badly during training while sparring with Dean, I think, because John ishovering and yelling, and it's the last straw with John who has not been pleased with Sam's progress in the hunting arena. I think Sam is 15 in this story (though he could be thirteen or fourteen). As far as I remember Sam does end up in the hospital because of the injury and John
basically puts Sam under house arrest after the fact saying he has to devote himself entirely to training.

I remember that the story starts out with Sam trying to beg off training so he can study and Dean tells him to suck it up. And Sam doesn't fight the house arrest because he wants his father to love him and be proud and he doesn't want to be the reason that his brother or father is hurt or killed during a hunt, but he's slowly dying inside and even though he's focused completely on training he's actually getting worse at the sparring and stuff. At the very end, I believe Sam hits his head on a rock while sparring with Dean and when he goes inside to take care of the bleeding Dean stops John and says that things aren't working out like they thought and Sam's getting worse and that they have to try something different. So, John offers to take Sam to the pizza place he likes. Sam's really tired and just wants to go and sleep and he's a little hurt because Dean likes the pizza place not Sam but he recognizes it for the gesture it is and goes along and that's the end."
