J2 general request
Hey folks! I am new to reading J2 and through looking back 400+ entries in this community I have come across tons of great fic to read, but now have a more specific request.

Fic that is:

- well written
- AU
- Long (30,000 words or more)
- Does not center on High School or college as its main plot
- Has a happy ending

Anything else goes! Whether the boys are just regular guys working a 9-5, or are magical creatures of some sort. I just want fic where school isn't the driving force in the story telling. Thanks in advance for any fic recced!

I would also love any non-thematic rec lists for J2 that include word count, if anybody has links handy.

Sounds like you need to get into the Big Bang fics - check it out here - http://spn-j2-bigbang.livejournal.com/profile

All stories are 20,000+ words, and seperated by J2 and SPN and pairing. Have fun!

Thanks for the link! I will definitely look through this for plots that interest me. The amount of fic is quite intimidating, haha.

Check out anything by Fleshflutter for a start. :) Not a bad story in any of her writing.

J2 AU 300K (http://delicious.com/electricmonk/pairing%3Aj2%20au+count%253A%253E300K)

You will have to check the tags/summary to exclude an highschool/college AUs. Alas, delicious does not have a way to filter out by tags yet!

By the way, I only ever rec stories that I think are well-written. :)

Thanks so much! Will be looking through your tags for sure. :)

[livejournal.com profile] nyxocity has several long, well-written AU J2 fics:

Until You're Resting Here With Me (http://nyxocity.livejournal.com/71559.html)  63.5k

Who Watches Over Me? (http://nyxocity.livejournal.com/192674.html)  97.2k

Beautiful Disaster (http://nyxocity.livejournal.com/179928.html)  97k

I have an embarrassing amount of these for someone who doesn't really read RPS. Mmkay then.

In From the Cold by ladyjanelly (http://ladyjanelly.livejournal.com/tag/homeless%20jensen)

It's AU, with homeless Jensen and Jared working at a clinic. Not sure what the exact word count it, but there are about 22 chapters and the podfic (which I heartily recommend) is about 20 hours long, so...

Counting the Steps to the Door of Your Heart by annella (http://annella.livejournal.com/1061203.html)

44.5k words, and while Jensen is in college, it's a pretty background thing for most of the fic. Also, everyone is incredibly geeky. Jensen has a Dalek costume. Just so you know.

A Slow Process of Understanding by arabia764 (http://arabia764.livejournal.com/322517.html)

94k words, and so well written...all of these fics are, but this one takes the cake in terms of sheer amazingness, Gets dark and angsty at times, but it is a slavefic.

Also, I'm not sure if you were interested in a series rec, but bertee wrote a really awesome 'verse with the boys in space as monster hunters. It's really pretty awesome, about 60k for all three stories.First one is The Future's Nothing New (http://bertee.livejournal.com/62066.html).

All of these sounds fantastic, and thanks so much for giving me your thoughts on them.

Doors of Time; seconded!
Link: http://felisblanco.livejournal.com/1090487.html

But anything by Felisblanco is great. (The second maybe In a Mirror Distorted and Indistinct? http://felisblanco.livejournal.com/672910.html )

Afraid I don't have links for the other two...but I also highly highly recommend the Big Bangs.

Veterans Of The Psychic Wars http://psychicwar.livejournal.com/3019.html

Word Count: 45,294
Warnings: violence, sex, language
When the invasion came, no-one was ready. Humanity faltered. We died by the thousands, then by the millions. Nations fell before them before the survivors could begin to hold them back.

The battles raged across the world, and communications became difficult, and then impossible. South America was gone. Before contact with Europe and Asia was lost, they were struggling, but surviving. In North America, the line held at last, a curve that stretched from Oregon to Louisiana. To the south, a battle-ravaged wasteland. To the north, the survivors and the refugees huddled beneath the shields of the Protected Zone, safe by the work of shield Psions who could form the only barrier that worked.

Along the front, soldiers waged war at terrible cost against an enemy that was truly inhuman. The tides of war turned on the work of battlefront Psions and their Guardians, elite warriors who could change the course of a battle with their skill and power.

At the most desperate moment in humanity's history, two men would face the battle. Jared Padalecki, a Psion whose power could only lead him to self-destruction alone in the face of the horrors of war, and Jensen Ackles, a Guardian fractured by his past.

Apart, they are broken and incomplete. Together, they just might save the world, and maybe even themselves.

With You Under A Cold, Bright Sky http://arabia764.livejournal.com/234547.html

Word count: approx. 120,000
Summary: At seventeen, Jensen thought he knew what his future would be; a life spent in the circus, and so he didn't see much point in attending a sports camp for gifted athletes. Until he met a brilliant young gymnast called Jared. Together, all their hopes and dreams were just within reach when one split second of carelessness shattered everything, tearing them apart for years.

Back together as grown men, they try to create a new future, with new dreams, on a cold mountainside on the other side of the world.
