Dean's reaction to sedan!Impala

When I was out getting the season 2 dvds today, I saw a newer looking Impala that looked like a sedan. Is there any stories that have Dean's reaction to them and how they compare to his "baby"?

I've seen the newer Impalas and they are fugly. I'm sure Dean would concur. Obviously I wasn't using my brain when I ordered season 2 DVDs online because I won't have them till Thursday! Sheesh, why didn't I think about buying them at Best Buy or something. :)

OMG, tell me about it! Mine is coming tomorrow...

And yes, the new Impala is definitely not a 'chick magnet' IMO. I don't think even Dean could make one of them look good.

Ahhh, but it's a joy to drive, and the trunk space is amazing.

I third the fugly. And I preordered the Supernatural and SGA DVDs in the same order so I won't have either for two weeks. *woe*

Wait - WHAT? Am I missing something? *is sort of not very car-smart*

Chevy still makes Impalas - there have been many generations of them. The current one is a really boring typical sedan that doesn't visually resemble the '67 at all.

DUDE - I nearly had a heart attack. I thought you were talking about one on the show. Yeesh. Yeah, I concur. (Now that I know what is going on here. :B)

Yup, that's quite true. Several models - not just from Chevy - have continued till today and there is zero question that American car design peaked in the late 60s, went downhill fast, and never recovered. I have even seen Chrysler 300s lately and they are clearly trying to look like modern Cadillacs or something - ugh. I had a sweet '62 Chrysler 300 once, an early version of a muscle car. Automakers ought to retire the names of once-beautiful cars!

AGREED. Quit while they're ahead and not tarnish the image.

Precisely! When I was trying to resist the pull of a new fandom (all my friends were saying "You have to watch Supernatural!"), one of the reasons I gave it a chance was that car. I figured if they were driving that beautiful car, it might be a great show.

As good a reason as any!

Heh. I came for the car. I stayed for the guys.

I can't remeber the fic but I know there is one out there - its a crossover w/Buffy verse. Sam & Dawn have sex in the back seat of the '67, and since Dawn's a virgin, it gets transformed into a new one. There is a madallion involved also. Dean just about dies right then & there when he relizes that its actually his Impala.

The new ones aren't too bad if you put 850 horses under the hood, a splitter on the front and really big numbers on the sides and roof. :))))

Inspired by the comments above, I wrote you just such a story.

* * *

“Fuck, did you SEE that?”

Sam woke with a heart-wrenching start, all flailing arms and whiplash neck. “What! WHAT?” From the decibel level of Dean’s bellow, he expected a warlock, a YED, or a nuclear explosion at the bare minimum.

“That thing was so fugly!!” Dean continued at top volume, glaring in the rearview mirror as though personally offended by what he saw.

Sam shifted and looked over his shoulder at the four-lane blacktop behind them. There were some scattered cars disappearing in the distance but nothing unusual. Surely Dean didn’t mean the landscape. The Book Cliffs in Utah were a bit stark, but far from unattractive. “Huh?” he said with all the mental acumen of the recently awakened.

“When there’s a really cool model, they oughta retire the name, quit while they’re ahead and not tarnish the image.”

Sam smiled to himself. He was fully awake now and up to Dean-speed. “Let me guess: you saw a late-model Impala.”

“Sam, it was just wrong. Like Linda Blair’s head doing a 360. Car design peaked in the sixties and it’s been downhill ever since.”

“Really? I think the PT Cruiser is kind of cool.”

Dean turned his head and gawked at Sam. “How are we even related?

“Watch the road, dude,” Sam said. When Dean didn’t comply but continued to stare at him like a gobsmacked imbecile, Sam reached out a finger and pushed on Dean’s cheek until his head rotated on his neck and faced the road again.

Not a moment too soon, since the highway was taking a sudden swerve to the right and Dean hauled hard on the wheel, rounding the curve in tight formation with a blue-haired senior citizen in a Winnebago. By the time the road straightened, the Impala was leaving the Bago in the dust.

“Speaking of fugly,” Dean started.

“Is there anything you like?” Sam interrupted.

“There oughta be a law,” Dean grumbled.

“Grow up, Dean, Congress has better things to do than make laws about car design.”

“Okay, but you’d think at least one state would allow automotive excrescences.”

Sam stalled out for a moment, caught off-guard by the notion that Dean had actually used the word excrescence in conversation. “So then certain cars wouldn’t be allowed across that state’s borders? Or they’d get a ticket for, hmmm…”

“DWU,” Dean said, nodding to himself. “Driving while ugly. Knew you had some brains in there.”

“You do realize, don’t you, that the ’67 Impala was designed to be a family sedan?”

“Don’t talk sacrilege, Sammy, we’ve got a trunk full of holy water and crucifixes.”

“No, really. The 2007 Impala is the logical extension of that. It’s a family sedan, for all we know it’s a joy to drive and I’ll bet the trunk space is amazing.”

Dean grimaced and made an indescribably goofy face that Sam read as stupid little brother is driving me off the edge of sanity and it’s a bloody short ride. “I wouldn’t drive that piece of shit if it had 850 horses under the hood, a splitter on the front, and really BIG numbers on the sides and roof.”

Sam knew there was only one surefire way to calm Dean down. By appealing to his ego. “If everyone was driving a sweet ride,” he said, “how would you stand out?”

Dean glanced over, stunned. Then, seeing the finger coming his way again, he faced front again. “Dude, did you just compliment my baby?”

“Not on purpose,” Sam muttered under his breath.

“I heard that,” said Dean.

“I’m going back to sleep,” Sam announced firmly.

“You do that, princess.”

“And don’t wake me up again unless the apocalypse has started.” Sam punched his folded jacket into a comfortable-looking shape and shoved it between the passenger window and his head. He considered snoring out loud to make the point, but all was quiet.

And Dean tried. He really did. He meant well. Mostly. But that was before the Impala started to creep up on a late-model Chrysler 300.

Dude! You need an Impala icon, that you do :DD

Sam stalled out for a moment, caught off-guard by the notion that Dean had actually used the word excrescence in conversation

Hell yeah, there's more to Dean than he let on, especially when it comes to his baby ( the Impala, not Sam ).

ILU!!

Oops, now I see a typo - "outlaw" not "allow" automotive excrescences. Dang, that's the trouble with beta-less comment-fic.

Still, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D

And I DO need an icon for Dean's baby.

Lovely fic! The characterization is spot on. I like Sam pushing Dean's head to face the road with his finger, nice imagery. Hee! Very cute to see the relationship between Sam and Dean. And Dean's car, of course. :D

You should post this in your lj, or on a comm somewhere so more people can read it!!

I did post it in my LJ after awhile, because I figured I shouldn't be spamming this comm. Thanks!

Thanks for giving me the idea. I was inspired to make an icon, too. :)

I knew I've read something like this before, just forgot who the author was, thus the late response. It's all dialogue, but fits your requirement quite nicely.
