Favorite dystopian fics? Sam/Dean or Jared/Jensen
What are some of ya'll's favorite dystopian fics? Either Sam/Dean or Jared/Jensen. Tales where the world as we (they) know it has disintegrated, and every day is a struggle for survival. Not necessarily related to canon apocalypse. (There may, or may not, still be monsters in the earth.) I've sometimes thought that the show could (should?) explore this path more (e.g., 'The End.')
Recs appreciated - the longer, the better.

The Winchester Road (http://meus-venator.livejournal.com/12300.html) by [livejournal.com profile] meus_venator is sensational. Loosely based on the book/movie The Road but tied into Supernatural and the apocalypse. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Treasure (http://archiveofourown.org/works/402918/chapters/664221) by [livejournal.com profile] sonofabiscuit77 is one of my very favourite fics. Sort of set in the end!verse. It's fabulous.

Here is the link to fics tagged Dystopian over at my Delicious (https://delicious.com/reggie11/theme%3A%20dystopian%20world).

Warning for major character death at the end of The Winchester Road. I cried. A lot. It is good, but just be forewarned. :)

I thought the ending was ambiguous and didn't really see it as character death - hence no warning for it. I guess it depends how you look at it.

Thanks! I've read TREASURE, but not THE WINCHESTER ROAD, so - wild anticipation!

This is one of my favorite Sam/Dean dystopian tics. I know it's been rec'd here before though.

The Last Outpost of All That Is (http://gekizetsu.net/sn/lastoutpost.htm) - The world is over, and it’s a Winchester’s lot in life to cope with anything – no matter what. NC-17 for graphic Sam/Dean.

this is such an amaaaaaaaaaaaazing story, must second this rec.<3

Yesssss, one of my favorites - just cried over it again the other day.

One of my favorite fics in all of the fandom is Dictionary for a Dead Language (http://britomart-is.livejournal.com/154955.html) by [livejournal.com profile] britomart_is. It's been podficced too, and if you're interested I can find the link :)

Summary: Under mysterious circumstances bitterly disputed by the historians, Sam Winchester said yes to Lucifer. Three years later, Lucifer is gone and the familiar landscape that the Winchesters once traversed is a burnt-out ruin of its former self — not to mention the damage done to Lucifer's vessel. Trapped in a grotesque parody of domestic bliss with a brother he no longer recognizes, a shell-shocked Dean has no reason to believe that happy endings exist for men like the Winchesters.

Wow, have not read many of these - looking forward. Thanks!

What is Always and Everywhere

Summary: One cold night in Michigan, Sam went for a walk and met something else on his way. Two years later, he had finally learned to cope and Dean was actually dealing with things pretty well. Then the sky fell on Ash Wednesday and left them separated by thousands of miles.

These days, Sam is a freak amongst freaks and surviving the best he can as a latter day gladiator. Every time he steps into the arena, he doesn't know if he will live to see the next fight. As for Dean, he’s still out there and trying to make it back to his brother in one piece, which is sometimes a lot harder than he’d like it to be. It’s a long walk; so long sometimes that he doesn’t know if he’s walking to Hell or New Orleans.

(although the brothers are separated for most of the fic, it's really, really amazing. I loved reading about both of their situations and how they wanted to find one another)

"Lazarus Came Forth" by Oselle.

http://oselle.livejournal.com/329417.html#cutid1

Summary: Dean makes it out of hell and finds that things topside are not much better than down below. Apocalypse fic of the whimper rather than bang variety.

This is, hands down, my favorite story written in the entire SPN fandom. This is how i wish season 4 went. It's a look at how the world is gradually falling into apocalyptic/dystopian times as Dean returns from Hell and is searching for Sam. I felt myself believing how the world is slowly falling apart in this fic, the author does an amazing job of painting a warzone America as a result of supernatural forces and they combine the civilian with the supernatural. It's simply amazing and the buildup in the story is incredible. Sam and Dean are seperated for a lot of the story, but the wait is absolutely worth it.

Thank you. I love that everyone has their own Favorite Story in the fandom - and they're all different, but also excellent. So many perspectives - so little time!

Here are some of my favorites
Carry the Fire (http://zagzagael.livejournal.com/368238.html) also inspired by the Road

Dust & Shadow (http://portraitofafool.livejournal.com/70097.html) a virus/plague changes the world. I can not recommend this one enough, it is one of my favorites. There are sections written from the plague's point of view and it is amazing.

The Good Place (http://spn-j2fan.livejournal.com/24113.html) inspired by Of Mice and Men
[identity profile] onlythefireborn.livejournal.com on April 21st, 2014 03:56 pm (UTC)
Thank you - haven't read the first, got the second stored on my Kindle (still unread), and I also loved THE GOOD PLACE - so poignant and so right, as a very different characterization of The Boys.

I second "Lazarus came forth" and I'll throw a J2 in with the lot.

We fell in love in a hopeless place (http://nightrider101.livejournal.com/64612.html): On the eve of the third world war, major world powers built machines to stand in the place of human soldiers. Who knew the machines would get along better than the humans ever did? Governments and cities fell one after another as the machines -- red-eyed, metal monsters built to level cities and destroy humanity -- wreaked havoc across the world. Now there is no communication, no infrastructure, no law to rely on, and people are living in scattered pockets across the globe. Jensen is a member and unsaid leader of one of those camps, dug into underground bunkers by night, and raiding the desolate husk of a broken city by day. Jared finds his way to the ragtag group of survivors, and they all struggle to find their place in a world that is nothing like what they have known.

Oh, and I nearly forgot:
http://And Hell followed with him (http://And Hell followed with him):This is an alternate take on season 4: Dean's gone to Hell, and Hell's come to Earth. Sam is leading a handful of people who are continually caught in a struggle against the demons that walk amongst them. One day, four years after his deal was up, a battered Dean returns from Hell at the same time that suspicions begin that there is a mole in the camp.

Thanks - I always love the boys in a quasi-military setting.

Unfortunately, the link to AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH HIM didn't work. Author's page?

I loved this story:
New Day, New Dawn by Syls Darkplace ([livejournal.com profile] sylsdarkplace) J2 Post-apocalyptic AU
Summary: After a mysterious contagion kills most of the women on Earth, two men come together and try to build something new.

and
and miles to go before i sleep - [livejournal.com profile] salire Dean/Sam PostApoca MPREG!Sam
Summary: In a post-apocalyptic world where half the population is scrounging to survive and the other half is trying to blow everybody up, Dean searches for a safe haven so that a heavily pregnant Sam can have their baby without them being in danger of getting blown up/attacked by bandits/etc.

and
Shelter in place by [livejournal.com profile] foolsdance J2 AU
Summary: When civilization crumbles and Jared has to flee the death trap that the cities have become, he heads for the refuge of his grandfathers cabin in the pristine Colorado mountains. He acticipates a long hard winter spent in solitude. What he doesn't expect is that the cabin would be already occupied, or who he would find there.
