your favorite gen fic, either Sam and Dean -or- J2
Pretty much always been a Wincest woman, with occasional forays into J2. Lately, however, I'm feeling a need-to-read gen fic - well-written fic, with a strong plot, intriguing themes, the boys' authentic voices, etc. Canon or AU, the longer the better. (Stories with a strong subtext of UST would be especially appreciated. The UST tag on this site focuses too much on the 'S' and not enough on the 'UT' - my opinion.)

My only caveat is that the boys and their interaction (with a case or a problem) are the center of the story - rather than. for instance, an epic romance with another character.

I am not at all familiar with this type of SPN fic. So, in your expert opinions, where should I begin? Please recommend specific stories and/or writers.

Thanks so much - ya'll are The Best!

A couple of self-recs, if you don't mind. Both long ones

http://archiveofourown.org/works/92940
Everybody Goes to Rick's, an alternate canon story in which Dean and Sam never reunite during Sam's time at Stanford. Sam is married to Jess and they have a daughter, but the bulk of the story is casefic and brotherly stuff.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/68191
The Apotheosis of Wile E. Coyote, an alternate S3. Sam wants to get Dean out of his deal, but Dean has found a case. It's not going to go anything like they expect.

Thank you so much. These look great.

I've just been going through big_pink's works on LJ. She is the most amazing gen writer I've come across, esp. for casefic and excellent narrative voice. Her stuff's early-- S1 & S2, and is lacking in any UST, which I know you asked for... but please check her stuff out. Look for the Red Verse.

My link skills suck, so try this (how do other people do this? My links always look like garbage and don't actually link.)

http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=big_pink&keyword=Red&filter=all

And while I see that you are looking for specifics, I've found forays into the big bang backlists to be really helpful in finding authors to look out for.
[identity profile] onlythefireborn.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 06:17 pm (UTC)
Thanks - just downloaded big_pink's RED verse on your rec.

The BB backlists were my next port of call - just wanted to get some recommendations first.

I had problems with linking so I hope you don't mind me helping--or trying to :)

Open the link page and copy the URL address, then when you're adding your comment, highlight the story title and click the Insert Link icon (it looks like a round globe with a chain link). A box will pop up and you can paste your URL link. When you click Insert the link will look crazy, but when you post the comment the title will be blue colored with the link neatly hidden ready to be clicked.

Thanks! I guess I never went back to look at my comments to see if they worked. I appreciate it, because I love it when I can just open the link in someone's comment and not copy and paste.

You are awesome, I always wanted to know how to make "neat and lovely" links ;)
You deserve a cookie, here is my best friend´s ff written for me. It´s What I Guard (http://archiveofourown.org/works/704088) and it´s wincest from Castiel´s POV. Thank you

Thanks. Just paying it forward from the lovely people who have helped me (but it's nice to be appreciated) :)

Coming Down on a Sunny Day (http://maychorian.livejournal.com/136067.html) by Machorian it is gen with Sam, Dean, Castiel, Jimmy and John as a family. It is long and very well written.

I know your specifically looking for gen with Sam and Dean, so I would suggest checking out more of Machorian's works. I'm working on reading through her fics, and I know quite a few of hers are gen with a focus on Sam and Dean's relationship.
[identity profile] onlythefireborn.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 06:19 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much for the rec. I love finding a writer I haven't read, whose quality is consistent from story to story, esp when it comes to characterization.
[identity profile] usagimc.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 09:12 am (UTC)
Would you be interested in crossover fic. I have read a few good criminal mind crossover fics that are good length and are some of my favorite fiction. :)

Starting with defect. This is the beginning of a trilogy.

http://www.fanfic.otherplaces.net/defect.htm

Then there is Mask of Sanity.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5479811/1/Mask-of-Sanity

Both of these are set in spn universe, no romance. Great interaction between all the characters. Have read them multiple times.

And I know that you are on a gen kick now but in case u feel like taking a dip into rpf felisblanco has some wonderfully long fics. My fave from her is Doors of Time. J2, epically long but really loved, that fic. :)

So hope this helps u some.

[identity profile] onlythefireborn.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 06:20 pm (UTC)
Well, I love CRIMINAL MINDS, so I'll probably love your recs for crossover.

Esp. since you recommend felisblanco's DOORS OF TIME - which i have read over and over again, one of my favorites. So obviously you have excellent taste! :-)

Mask of Sanity is finished? How did I miss this? OP, this is part of an awesome series! I think I have too many exclamation marks in this comment but I am really excited!! Thanks for posting this [livejournal.com profile] usagimc.

Anything by BlackIceWitch (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/3434281/BlackIceWitch). Her stories are amazing. She did take down all of them a few months ago, but is in the process of reworking and reposting several of them :).

Also, Crossing Over (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9684937/1/Crossing-Over) and its sequel, Crossing Wires (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10279549/1/Crossing-Wires) by MarleeJames (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/5130115/MarleeJames) - they are written from first person OFC POV, but are very, very good. I usually avoid first person POV SPN stories, but these are brilliantly written. She also has a companion story, Driftwood (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10260633/1/Driftwood) which is from Dean's POV (third prson) covering a period of time that the OFC wasn't there.

I would also recommend these communities, which concentrate on finding the best, well-written gen and het stories:
Unique and Unforgettable (https://www.fanfiction.net/community/Unique-and-Unforgettable/110278/3/0/1/)
True to the Spirit of Supernatural (https://www.fanfiction.net/community/True-to-the-Spirit-of-Supernatural/96965/3/0/1/)
The Winchester Abyss (https://www.fanfiction.net/community/The-Winchester-Abyss/98386/)
Not Alone: Best OC Stories (https://www.fanfiction.net/community/Not-Alone-Best-OC-Stories/102777/3/0/1/)

Thank you so much, esp for the list of communities. These look like great places to pursue this type of fic.

Anything by GaelicSpirit (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1128719/gaelicspirit)
[identity profile] onlythefireborn.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 06:35 pm (UTC)
Thanks to everyone who recommended work or communities on fanfiction.net. I am unfamiliar with that site - it seems to be a different place than it was when I was reading BUFFY fanfiction (does that tell you how old I am?!), less contentious and judgmental.
[identity profile] heavenli24.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 08:47 pm (UTC)
Don't worry, I'm right there with you... Buffy was my first fandom and I read Buffy fic for 5 years straight back in the day :p. I avoided Fanfiction.net for years though because of it's reputation.. It's only been in the last 3-4 years that I've been using it and that's only because I didn't really have much choice.

Second BigPink, sharlot1926 and Reading (Mask of Sanity - Strangers and Angels verse).

Plus:
Gaelicspirit has a lot of good stories. Some that I like:
- Ramble On. Summary: When a hunt goes sideways, the brothers are hurt and lost in the northern Minnesota woods. They have only each other and their skills to get them out...and they aren't alone.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3266757/1/Ramble-On
- Hear no Evil. Summary: The trickster left the brothers in need of a clean hunt. An explosion turns a routine spirit hunt into anything but clean. Dean must deal with the ramifications, while Sam tries to finish the job and help his brother pick up the pieces.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4335279/1/Hear-No-Evil

There's also Nong Pradu's My Father's Favourite. Summary: Pre-series. 11 year-old Sam doesn't want to move away again, so he prays for his family to stay in one place. It's a case of "Be careful what you wish for."

Everything by gaelicspirit! Just avoif her Brenna stories if you don"t want romance (even though even those ones as amazing, in my opinion).

I do have one question for those of you who have recommended work on fanfiction.net - do those writers ever publish PDF files?
(Anonymous) on August 13th, 2014 08:14 pm (UTC)
Both [livejournal.com profile] nong_pradu and [livejournal.com profile] gaelicspirit have livejournal accounts but I can't find them on AO3.
[livejournal.com profile] sharlot1926 publishs at AO3 under the username Sharlot (you can download a PDF file).
As far as I know reading only posts at FFN, so you can't download their stories in PDF.
[identity profile] spnlicous.livejournal.com on August 13th, 2014 09:30 pm (UTC)
She post as [livejournal.com profile] reading1066 on LJ but it's easier to follow the fic on ffnet.
[identity profile] kiimber.livejournal.com on August 14th, 2014 03:55 am (UTC)
I haven't read any gaelicspirit yet but I found this page of her PDFs (http://www.mediafire.com/?w55mlhzpegsbx) available on mediafire. (I get so aggravated by fanfiction.net. It's one thing to not allow copy and paste, but they could at least make the story available in one document...grrrr)

Tethered by Cheryl W
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8023399/1/Tethered
For Dean and Sam the only thing harder than staying together…is being forced to be apart. No Slash.

Also, anything else by Cheryl W is really well written, she pretty much only focuses on the brotherly bond.

It might be a bit preposterous, but I write mostly gen J2-AU ((and a bit of gen sPN, though you have much better recs already here so I'll focus on the one thing I haven't found anywhere else) and I would say my fics are at least moderately well-written.

So you're welcome to check out my stories either on my journal (masterlist is right on top) or on AO3 http://archiveofourown.org/users/marlowe78 (but I'm not sure if there are some missing stories only on lj)

And for really, really good gen-SPN, check out my recs on Delicious (https://delicious.com/marlowe97)

we could be heroes (http://spn-summergen.livejournal.com/29949.html) by [livejournal.com profile] missyjack
Summary: A tall tale is a uniquely American story form that features a larger-than-life, or superhuman, main character with a specific task. Many tall tales are based on actual people or on a composite of actual people. Exaggeration is the major element in tall tales.
