Space epic - Tabaqui is currently writing THE WORLD WHERE YESTERNIGHT YOU DIED (up to 48K words so far) and is updating it regularly.

They are both living with secrets that will cause their lives to intersect, and put them both on the path to exposing one of the biggest cover-ups in the 'verse.

Mpreg and a/b/o squick me out. That said (and even though), one of my top 5 favorites is compo67's PUNZEL 'verse (J2) - the first story alone is 96K, and it has 20 sequels. Perfect reading for a heat wave - hot sex, lots of humor, silly schmoop, plus a surprisingly intimate and realistic look at building relationships. It begins in this way: Jensen is a ride operator at the Storybook Land Canal in Disneyland. His day changes unexpectedly and he ends up outside Goofy's House with a lost little girl and a pregnant coworker.

Probably my favorite epic is A MONSTER BY ANY OTHER NAME series - over 500K words now and still being updated (regularly). It's Sam/Dean, but they aren't brothers. NOTE: It's often very dark, including torture and rape (although not terribly graphic). The same old Sam/Dean love story, with a darkfic twist. Sam grows up in a concentration camp for monsters, and Dean is raised as an only child and a hunter. Together, they make each other human.

Notes: This is some real Dante's Inferno, Silent Hill, Hellraiser type shit right here. The Hellscape rainylemons creates is horrifically breathtaking. In this fic, Sam decides that if Dean won't talk, he'll have to use African Dream Root.

It has torture/gore, body horror, and brief elements of rape, so be warned. But somehow it manages to do this tastefully, because the subjects therein are handled with an artistic hand, not meant to be a cheap sock in the gut that they virtually always are otherwise. This means that- as weird as it is to say about an element of a story that also contains halls flooded with inches of blood and organs- it's less graphic, less specific, but more existentially unsettling.

Crossover: Criminal Minds
Dean is finally captured by the FBI just as his time runs out.

Notes: If you've never seen Criminal Minds, the bare minimum of episodes you should see is 1x01 and 1x02, but to get a really good feeling of who the characters are, 1x14, 2x17, and 2x21 are my recommendations.

Kikki's depiction of Gideon is beyond flawless. I've never seen characterization this good anywhere else. It's done with such care in every aspect- from Gideon's at times insensitive working manner to his near-limitless compassion in situations few others would be able to stomach- that I dare to say it has a purity of character the show usually lacks. And Lord, is this fic sad. It has a happy ending- and two sequels- but...



3. It's a tie between creature!Dean fics and Post-Hell Issues fics. You can find some great examples of both on my recs page. (http://electric-sympathy.tumblr.com/spnficrecs) I try to keep only top-notch fics in that list.

A call from one of Sam's college friends brings the boys to a remote Colorado hotel in the midst of a blizzard to investigate a death and a haunting.

This is for poisontaster, who had no idea what sort of monster she was creating when she requested a story in which Dean gets hurt and Sam's got to take up the slack.

Notes: IIRC, this is the first, and so far the only, SPN fic to actually give me fear tears. Reminiscent of The Shining and very, very cool.


5c. Playing The Angel (The Genesis Variant, etc.) (http://moonshayde.livejournal.com/427375.html) Ctrl+f "Playing the Angel" for the masterlist. Gen; optional Dean/Jo

While Sam and Dean continue fighting to prevent the Apocalypse, Dean inexplicably manifests a pair of wings. The brothers must work together to figure out what is happening and reverse the act before the changes overtake Dean completely.

Notes: One of my most favorite fics, and the first wing!fic I ever read, mostly on a whim. The genre didn't interest me before, but hot damn is this fic good. It's everything it's supposed to be; unlike a lot of transformation fics where it's just flavor or a means to an end, Dean's manifestation of wings is thoroughly explored, both emotionally and physically. And trust me, them wings aren't just for show. Unfortunately, this was both the first wingfic I read and the best, so there's nowhere else to go but down...
