What's up with samdean archive?
Hi guys, I've been having a bit of a problem lately. I cannot load any page from the samdean archive. I've already tried to use different phones, computer - yet nothing works. Is any of you having the same problem? Is there a way to solve it? (or is it - hopefully - just temporary?)
I know there has been similar entry two or so weeks ago but they apparently managed to solve it but it haven't worked for me.
I don't want to spread panic or anything, I just want to know whether the problem is on my side or something else :( I may be going a little bit crazy...

It's not you; it is the site.

If you scroll down the comments in this post, you will see an explanation of the situation by [livejournal.com profile] meus_venator.

Thank you so much :( it's a pity not all the works managed to be transfered to AO3 before it was gone. Well at least I know what happened

Yeah, I was asking about this too. It was down for a few days, then came back up, but now seems to be completely down. Worse still, when I tried a couple of days ago, I got the message that the profile was purged! I'm seriously hoping that it's not actually the case, as there are a lot of tics on there that I've never found posted anywhere else. 😳😳😭😭

The Wayback Machine (https://archive.org/web/) has a number of them (https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://samdean.archive.nu/*) - actual story links begin on page 20. It's definitely easier to find a story if you know the story number from the archive.

Search options. Replace "2479" with the number of the story you are looking for:

To see if the full story (all chapters) has been cached:

To see if the story has been cached at all:

To look for a particular chapter (also works for stories with only 1 chapter):

Hi there, can I ask you a question regarding Wayback Machine?

I'm trying to look up a story there: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5770849/Sam_Sammy_Samantha
and I'm getting this message "Page cannot be displayed due to robots.txt." What does this mean?
[identity profile] casey679.livejournal.com on February 5th, 2017 06:42 am (UTC)
Sure! Sadly, that message means means the page couldn't be crawled by the Machine because of the site's settings. "Robots.txt" is the file the site uses to tell web crawlers not to crawl and cache the content.

Ah, darn! I was hoping there would be better news. This is just another great story that got deleted then. :(

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it! :)

Hey, I don't really want to get your hopes up too much but sometimes the wayback machine sites started working for me even despite the robots.txt - I'm not sure what I've done for it (deleting cookies? Nothing specificaly?) or it worked on my laptop when phone couldn't display it.

Thanks for your reply. I kept getting that message and didn't know if there was a way around it or not. I'll check it out further. :)

Hi there, I was just going through my bookmarks and saw this post. I thought I would let you know that Wayback Machine finally worked for me about 2 weeks ago. I was able to get my story I'd been searching for, for a *long* time!

Thanks again for explaining how Wayback Machine worked. (thank you, thank you, thank you!) :D

But what if you only know the series title not the number for it- how do you find it?
[identity profile] casey679.livejournal.com on May 4th, 2017 06:39 pm (UTC)
There are a couple of options you can try:

* search on google for: "series title" samdean.archive.nu
(As an example, here's a search for Jassy's Regrets trilogy on Google: https://www.google.com/#q=regrets+samdean.archive.nu (https://www.google.com/#q=regrets+samdean.archive.nu))

* If you know the author's name, you can search on google for: "author name" samdean.archive.nu
(As an example, here's a search for Jassy on Google: https://www.google.com/#q=jassy+samdean.archive.nu (https://www.google.com/#q=jassy+samdean.archive.nu))

Now, any link that shows up will not work because the archive is down, but you can get the story ID number from the link. AND, if there is a little downwards-pointing triangle next to the link, Google should have a cache of it. Click the triangle and select "cached" and it will take you to its snapshot of the page.

If you get nothing doing this, your best bet is probably to search on SPNStoryfinders itself and see if anyone else has looked for and/or found the series. Good luck!

Have you tried typing the title into AO3 search? The work might have been transferred there.

Found it! Found it! The Wayback machine has it saved! It's kind of slow, but its there! You have to sign up, get a virtual library card...its free. Then search samdean.achive.nu choose the last date, June 2016. Be patient! But it's there!
