Gen/Het Fics for Straight Male Fans
Hey everyone!

So I'm a huge Dean/Cas fan, but my guy friends in the TSCC fandom who also are big fans of Supernatural are scared of the fandom because of all the slash. And unfortunately, they have this idea that SPN fic isn't good!

I want to prove to them that they're wrong, but I don't really read a lot of gen fic, so I need your help.

Also, I'm sure they'd be okay with pairing fics, as long as it's completely het. I know for sure that one of the guys likes Jo with Dean (and Bela, but I'm sure that pairing is even more rare.)

They all think Cas is BAMF! (which is true), so if the fic has BAMF!Cas, that's a huge plus. Dean/Cas friendship is fine as well.

And for this rec request, I'm really just looking for those AWESOME fics! Well-written, well-plotted, etc. Just because they're guys doesn't mean it has to be all about guns and aggression and everything, fluff and emo stuff is fine. (I know from their opinions on TSCC fics.)

Hopefully you guys can help, because I think it'd be a real shame if these guys kept on going through their lives thinking SPN fic isn't good.

Self-recs totally welcome! (Also, you might find additional details in the tags as well--got some ideas of what they might like while going through the tag list.)

There's a ton of great casefics out there. Hang on, and I will try to locate some for you. Damn me and my lack of bookmarking skills...

In the meantime, I think my Big Bang Nihil Inherit (http://ratherastory.livejournal.com/60075.html) might qualify. It has Cas being pretty awesome (he makes dramatic entrances, anyway), and it's a sort of Season 3 AU.

Great! Well, I already started my recs to them with your DCBB, so might as well keep with the pattern :-)

Looking forward to seeing what other recs you have.

Try [livejournal.com profile] unoshot, who writes excellent Castiel-centric Dean + Castiel and Sam + Castiel gen.

Anything by BigPink here http://web.mac.com/bigpink1/Big_Pink/Tales.html

She writes excellent gen case-fics, with spot-on characterisations, fast-paced plots, humour and angst. This is Sam and Dean as they are onscreen. But no Castiel...

This is going to be a long list:

http://dayspring.skeeter63.org/gold.html - Dean's life goes in a whole other direction when Sam supposedly dies at age four. But while on the Shooting Team in the 2004 Olympics, Dean meets a tall, shaggy-haired swimmer. Can the yellow-eyed demon be far behind?

http://unhobbityhobbit.livejournal.com/165978.html - Good old sex pollen. Dean takes a hit and some quite severe sexual deviancy ensues. {Iffy -- it's not Dean/Sam. At all.}

http://smilla02.livejournal.com/172924.html - Adam screams and bleeds and prays. And his vision's clouded by the tears and his nose's clogged with snot and he can't breathe.

http://bellatemple.livejournal.com/260431.html - An AU 'verse from Bella focusing on the boys having grown up together after the death of their father in the fire. . .

http://rememberbefore.livejournal.com/28752.html - Rebecca would only stare at them silently when they asked her questions.

http://lassiterfics.livejournal.com/143182.html - So that's how Becky ends up babysitting a fallen angel with a broken arm. It's probably the weirdest thing that's ever happened to her and, considering recent events, that's saying something.

http://ksock.livejournal.com/15768.html - Dean, Sam and Castiel are holed up at Bobby's and they're all a little bored. Dean and Sam try to take advantage of the time off by helping Castiel assimilate.

http://bellatemple.livejournal.com/249342.html - Sam accidentally gets Dean out of Hell. The results are something no one could have expected. . . .

http://caffienekitty.livejournal.com/179249.html - John recognizes Dean from a man he met in 1973.

http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/159860.html - Sam Winchester has four problems when he runs into an old friend from high school:
1. Vanessa thinks he’s just a perfectly normal guy. Dean knows better. And balancing the past and present is going to be tricky, especially since . . .
2. Dean won’t stop flirting with her. Except when he’s busy dealing with the fact that . . .
3. Vanessa lives in what just might be the weirdest and creepiest house Sam has ever seen. Oh, and then there’s . . .
4. The ghost.

Try these. I’m not bringing Castiel either but I did choose carefully with straight men in mind!

Summary: "A mad scientist decides he wants to create the perfect hunter...and he thinks he's found the perfect brain...Dean's. one shot pre-series with high school Dean R
**Deliciously creepy!

Like a Pig Eating Donuts (http://community.livejournal.com/pixietales/24804.html) by [livejournal.com profile] wenchpixie
Summary: Summary: Dean, Sam and a little bit of Bobby (also a pig, a kid, candy, Dean being nearly as awesome as he thinks he is and Sam being made to do something that makes him feel nauseous in between not letting Dean use the laptop). ~10,500 PG-13
******Wee de-aged Bobby! Sam and Dean in charge of child care! This is a great combination of fun and touching.

Rumspringa (http://july-july-july.livejournal.com/34916.html) by [livejournal.com profile] july_july_july
Summary: I don’t know if you notice anything missing, like the leaves on the trees or my clothes all over the floor. I don’t know if you even notice at all. Cause I was real quiet when I closed the door. –Fink, “This Is The Thing”
**Sixteen year old Dean walks out and is on his own for a couple of months.

Dimentions and Verticals (http://bellatemple.livejournal.com/249342.html) by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple

***Not only delightful crack but it’s illustrated!

Ten Going on Thirteen (http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/38463.html) by [livejournal.com profile] dodger_winslow
Summary: For a ten year old, Dean really had the pain-in-the-ass part of being mature for his age down pat.
**While it’s not the most believable scenario, John is shot and Dean acts to save his life. The characterizations are stellar and the tension high.

Summer Camp (http://gigglingkat.livejournal.com/152650.html) by [livejournal.com profile] gigglingkat
Summary: "I sent his brother to summer camp," he explained.
"You heartless bastard," laughed the manager.
"That seems to be the general consensus," John agreed. ~5,500 G
**Delightful crack! When 7 year old Dean goes to camp, neither the camp nor the councilor are ever the same again!

Never Summer (http://ignipes.livejournal.com/82858.html) by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes
Summary: A call from one of Sam's college friends brings the boys to a remote Colorado hotel in the midst of a blizzard to investigate a death and a haunting. Novel length R
***Very in keeping with the style of the show. The relationship between the brothers and the amount of involvement with the original characters as well as the pace is spot on and realistic or at least as real as the series......

Red (http://big-pink.livejournal.com/16952.html) by [livejournal.com profile] big_pink
Summary: Something evil is killing treeplanters in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, possibly the same predator that Dean narrowly escaped years before. How Grimm will things get before the brothers figure it out? ~79,000 PG-13
**Very absorbing and creepy but you have to be on your toes with the changes back and forth from 3 time frames. An especially satisfying ending.

If you read "Ten going on thirteen", you have to read Stay (http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/78200.html#cutid1), same author, which is the same story, kinda, but from a different and AWESOME POV!

This fic has a great gen Castiel. It's third in a verse but can be read by itself (I highly rec the first two, they're excellent).

As far as I know, all of Dodger Winslow's fic is gen, and it's all excellent. I don't know how to make the linky things, but one of the author's fics was rec'ced above, and I wanted to be sure you knew of the others they wrote.

[identity profile] marlowe78.livejournal.com on November 17th, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
These are mostly case-based fics, all MORE than well-done. I'm trying to keep away from too much schmoop :-D

Bay (http://ficwriter1966.livejournal.com/tag/bay): A mysterious message, bearing a single word: BAY. It could be a cry for help, or it could be a trap. Armed with a little information from Bobby, Sam and Dean travel to a tiny town in the New Mexico desert and find themselves surrounded by angry hunters, oddball locals, and an elusive creature that's been slaughtering humans since before The West Was Won.

Strangers in Gilead (http://corvus-imbrifer.livejournal.com/6014.html): There are strangers in Gilead. A tall, well-kept man named Ben Cartwright, very probably a Pinkerton-Man, though he never confirmed it, and a green-eyed, sweet-talking, scruffy traveller named William Carlyle. What they want, how they came here - why they came? Nobody know, least of all Miss Rose and her girls from the saloon.

Hickory Hill (http://marinarusalka.livejournal.com/291208.html): A formerly harmless haunting suddenly escalates, and Sam and Dean investigate why.

Crossing the line (http://gekizetsu.net/sn/crossing.html): Blood, bridges and brothers, over and over and -
Geeeze, this is AWESOME

tbc
[identity profile] marlowe78.livejournal.com on November 17th, 2010 07:12 pm (UTC)

Eat it, Twilight (http://liliaeth.livejournal.com/339296.html): a must for all who have this very special opinion about Twilight... also, a crossover. Case-fic (and the story is older than season 6, so the plot of "Live free and Twihard" are either accidental, or the writers read it :-D ):
The BAU has to deal with a serial killer who believes he's hunting vampires. The unsub's name: Dean Winchester.

Haiku (God bless you) (http://superbadgirl.livejournal.com/765370.html): John sends the boys on a hunt, as cryptic as always, and when Dean and Sam arrive at their destination they run into some ... complications.
To-die-for funny!

No fortress is so strong (http://kimonkey7.livejournal.com/95486.html): a case-fic with HET \o/ and Dean and Sam and wonderful writing! kinmonkey is absolutely wonderful.

A good man is hard to find (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_gen/287772.html?thread=843548): (same author as above) Dean keeps his word and ramifications scatter like salt shots. Secrets, liquor and bad things.
Caution: drug-abuse.

Blind Spot (http://pdragon76.livejournal.com/34039.html): another wonderful author: pdragon76. 100% manly :-D Dean's on a slow burn after a bloody confrontation with an old nemesis. Sam's got his hands full picking up the pieces. The Crossroads Deal isn't the only timer ticking.

Everything I know about Marine Biology, I learned from my brother (http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com/221446.html) dunno how the guys think about funny, but this is short and makes you laugh you'll spill coke through your nose: Dean discovers the other use for the internet.

And deposit your trash in the receptacles provided (http://innocentculprit.livejournal.com/4212.html#cutid1): Between the Winchesters and the Apocalypse lies engine trouble and a bad breakdown in communication. Oh, and ghosts. Nasty ones.
Very angsty, with a GREAT plot and nasty ghosts. Fantastic style.

...and it went right to my head (http://kimonkey7.livejournal.com/62034.html?view=3760466#t3760466): John is dead, and Dean misses him fiercely
The absolutely most tearjerking, saddest and bestest fic about grief I ever read. Also kinmonkey.

You should definitely check one of these for yourself! They are worth it.

Land's End (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3719763/1/Lands_End) and its sequel Man's Allotted Span (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4165502/1/Mans_Allotted_Span) by EB. After Sam goes to Stanford and John is on a solo hunt, Dean takes a job crab fishing in the Bering Sea. A sort of crossover with Deadliest Catch, but there are no characters from the show.

I also suggest any of Dodger Winslow's fic, especially Parental Instincts (http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/30937.html), Ten going on Thirteen (http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/38463.html), and its companion Stay (http://dodger-winslow.livejournal.com/78200.html#cutid1).

This is a recent, Post S5 AU of mine I found just recently...I think it was written for this summers gen meme, but it's by [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons and it's just...amazing. Seriously took my breath away. It's called

Walk Away (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_summergen/82686.html)

and anything by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur...there's SOME slash, i think, but it's rare and i think she's good with warnings...it's older stuff too, i don't think she's done much since last year, save for a Swan Song coda...which was awesome, btw. but yeah, she's ridic good.

i think her master post is here (http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com/68780.html#cutid1). I recommend "Missus A Deo" (http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com/252084.html) and "What Comfort Was It Wisdom" (http://kroki-refur.livejournal.com/273038.html), although she's a fantastic writer, so I think all are good.

Second the rec for the Unoshot fics, particularly 'The Future As B-Movie' ( http://lassiterfics.livejournal.com/139184.html ) and sequels.

For Dean/Bela, there's 'The Last Watch Of Hero' (all chapters linked here because they're a pain in the neck to find otherwise)
