I have a reclist of Dean/Cas AU fics on my journal here (http://temporalranger.livejournal.com/47372.html). They're all excellent, and there's a star system in place - though admittedly, that's based off my personal preferences.

There are three really wonderful rec lists for Dean/Cas:
→ swing_set13au, which is the new home for the Epic Dean/Cas AU list. It's now members only, but it doesn't look like the membership is moderated. The list is here (http://swing-set13au.livejournal.com/tag/*dean%2Fcastiel%20master%20au%20list).
→ Dean/Castiel Thematic List (http://tracy-loo-who.livejournal.com/89415.html#cutid1") maintained by tracy_loo_who, the list is broken down into sections like 'BAMF!Cas,' 'Hurt/Comfort,' etc, so it's really easy to navigate.
→ AU rec list (http://temporalranger.livejournal.com/47372.html) maintained by temporalranger, this one is smaller than the epic list above and also includes a small Jensen/Misha section at the end.

Some writers I love are: shadow_legacy, blue_fjords, wolfrider89, and misachan to name a very, very few. Seriously, there are tons of great authors, I'm just grabbing the names of people I've read in the last couple weeks.

I am another Dean/Sam girl who likes to sample other pairings at times and especially Dean/Castiel. I mostly read AUs (human!Cas/not a hunter!Dean) nowadays and you didn't say if you like that kind of fics or not so I'll give you only a few recs that are pretty much classics : Peanut butter pumpkin wedding cake (http://sparseparsley.livejournal.com/8666.html), We became fans of collisions (http://community.livejournal.com/her_own_write/29507.html) and Asunder (http://archiveofourown.org/works/62115?view_adult=true). I'm not sure about who bottoms or who tops, sorry. I only really enjoy top!Dean but if I'd let that always stop me I wouldn't read much in this fandom ;)

The other authors, who often write both canon Dean and Castiel as well as AUs (and some Jensen/Misha), that I've enjoyed the most are, in no particular order, FayJay (http://archiveofourown.org/users/FayJay/works?selected_tags[]=27), trinityofone, CloudyJenn at cloudy_fic, olympia_m, strangenessandcharm (http://strangenessandcharm.dreamwidth.org), bauble, janie_tangerine, rockstarpeach, Orphan_account (http://archiveofourown.org/users/orphan_account/pseuds/orphan_account), blue_fjords, entangled_now, thevinegarworks, gedry... Many great writers for this pairing too !

:D Well, to each his own, I just wish it was more of a 50/50 thing, especially when it comes to kink. It does seem that Destiel has a bit more top!Dean but I don't read this pairing enough to be sure.

Personally, I think that the person who goes bottom in the fics are the person who are the most insecure or sad or broken... Well you get my point. And I just think that a lot of people want to see Dean in that position, since he always plays so macho in the series... And your right. In the Destiel pairing (which I love) it is more 50/50. Personally, I think its because people want to see Castiel in a position were he is vulnerable just as much as they want to see Dean in one. But of course, that's just my opinion. I could be totally wrong... ;)

One of my favorite fics: The Fourth Wall Series (http://libraryofsol.livejournal.com/106018.html#cutid1). The whole series, btw. The individual fics are more like chapters. It's so wonderful and funny and disturbingly INCharacter. Also, just read anything by that author.
